At 15 years old, TMC is adding a Baby, a 15km Baby Trail run.
With more runners learning the trails, and the traditional TMC routes being a little extreme for a first timer, TMC baby is for the first timers, or those that are not Olympian fit and taking things easy. It is not a flat Park run, there are decent hills, but the route is mostly Jeep track, making it easy to follow, and easier to run on than the Upper mountain trails.
Starting at UCT, the first 2,5kms are up. Scenic Devils Peak trails take you towards the Blockhouse. Once through the style, you take the corner of “Windberg” (old name of Devils Peak) and enjoy the majestic view across the City and Table Bay. You now are on a 3km descent, but, take it easy, it’s still a long way to go.
At 5,5km the running fun starts at the Shooting Quarry, as you drop a gear, switch into Diesel Engine mode and slog up a sharp hill. You are running above Vredehoek now, looking up at Table Mountain, on an undulating route to the 9km mark – a rock. Then the fun is over and the cursing begins, as you sweat up Platteklip track, a vertical lift shaft of a trail, 100metres of ascent. Built by Old Foresters with a sense of humour. If you make it to the top, you are heading off to Kloof Nek, the trail is rocky and loose at times, keep your eyes ahead. The Cableway is above you, and then you pop out onto Tafelberg Road. Avoid being run over by a Red Bus, stick to the side, and charge down to the Marshals at the Pedestrian crossing – the only way across the traffic! You have done 12km.
Onto Signal Hill with a gentle stinger / unexpected uphill and then very nice Single track along the base of Lions Head to near the Kramat, where you swing down a very steep hill (not what your quads really want) to the finish line and a cold beer! 15km.
